Lockdown Songs

The Fool

Play the office politics, play it well, avoid the pits

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

Bend the truth, tell little lies, sacrificed to compromise

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

Kiss the ass of those above, fit your hand into their glove

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

To get on in this life you have no cede

To satisfy my needs, ‘cos I’m no fool.

*

Cos the fool is quite contented as he strolls across the park

Encountering each stranger with a smile

He sits upon a bench to watch the light turn into dark

Before skipping home in some affected style

But it’s no trial, ‘cos he’s the fool

*

Jump the gun and step in line, volunteer for overtime

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

Crack the whip and get things done, work displaces having fun

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

Make it comprehensible, that I’m indispensable

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

Think of all the money I can save,

To spend before the grave ‘cos I’m no fool.

*

The fool sits on the pavement staring blankly into space

Marvelling at the generosity

Of workers going by and throwing money in his tin

He sees their chains the wearers cannot see

They are not free, free like the fool

*

Every day I go to work, sit in traffic go berserk

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

Tick the box from nine to five, got to make sure I survive

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

Every month in my account drops another small amount

I’m no fool, I’m no fool

I have no time to think, no time to rest,

I may not be the best, but I’m no fool

*

The fool looks out the window and appreciates the view

As he savours every second passing by

He ponders his existence and the things that he should do

But he’s never really understood just why

That he should try, ‘co he’s the fool

The first lockdown brought the country almost to a halt. For me, one of the benefits was that that the rat race slowed down and I could concentrate more on what was important… rather than going to work. I couldn’t understand why people were so desperate to get back to the office. I must have been a fool . – Paul
