I am

I am not a binary sex gender

I am not my sexuality

I am more than my skin colour

I am not a nationality

I am not the neighbourhood I live in

I am not the way I speak or look

I am much more than my religion

I am not an easily read book

*

I am who I am

I am who I am as it should be

I am who I am

I am who I am and can’t you see

You’re just like me.

*

I am not your poor relation

I am not a victim or a fool

I am not my education

I am not my comprehensive school

*

I am not the dirt beneath your sandals

I am not a disability

I am not a mental health disorder

I am not a scrounging refugee

I am was written  in response to the lead up of the 2020 US elections. So much division in one country. A melting pot of democrats, republicans, liberals, conservatives, Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+ all stirred up by a disruptive president to the point that people were being killed on the streets. Everyone seemed so busy shouting that nobody could hear what was being said. The truth is, despite out politics, education, sexuality and colour, we’re all the same with similar dreams and aspirations. – Paul
